Overview
The Fairway Finder game helps you turn a normal driving range session into a structured driving accuracy challenge. You will calibrate the range using a 250-yard target, hit 14 tee shots, and record where each ball finishes: fairway, left rough, right rough, or out of bounds.
You can also record the shot shape for each drive, such as a draw, fade, pull, push, hook, or slice. After the game, you will see your fairway percentage and the patterns in your misses.
What You Need
- A driving range
- A known target around 250 yards away, such as a flag or marker
- Your phone
- Your driver or preferred tee-shot club
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Start the Game
Open the Fairway Finder game and tap Start Game.
The app will ask you to turn your phone to landscape mode. Rotate your phone so the screen is horizontal.
2. Take a Picture of the Range
The app will prompt you to take a picture of the driving range.
On the screen, you will see a 250-yard horizon line. Line this up with a target on the range that you know is approximately 250 yards away.
For example, if your driving range has a 250-yard flag, align the 250-yard line with that flag.
3. Confirm the Calibration
After taking the picture, the app will ask whether you want to retake the photo or continue.
- Tap Retake if the 250-yard line is not lined up correctly.
- Tap Continue if the target is aligned properly.
Once you continue, the game is calibrated and ready to score your shots.
How the Scoring Grid Works
The game creates grid lines over the range image to represent different landing areas:
- Center grid: Fairway
- Left grid: Left rough
- Right grid: Right rough
- Outer grid lines: Out of bounds, or OB
Your goal is to hit as many balls as possible into the fairway grid.
How to Record Each Shot
1. Hit Your Shot
Hit your first drive and watch where the ball lands or finishes in relation to the grid.
2. Select the Landing Area
Tap the result that matches where the ball finished:
- Fairway
- Left
- Right
- OB
For example, if the ball lands directly down the middle, tap Fairway. If it misses left but stays in play, tap Left.
3. Select the Shot Shape
Next, choose the shot shape that best describes the ball flight.
Common examples include:
- Draw
- Fade
- Pull
- Push
- Hook
- Slice
- Pull hook
- Push slice
This helps you connect your misses with the ball flights that caused them.
For example:
- A ball that starts left and curves farther left may be a pull hook.
- A ball that starts right and curves right may be a push slice.
- A ball that curves gently from right to left may be a draw.
4. Tap Next
After recording the landing area and shot shape, tap the Next arrow to move to the next shot.
Repeat the process until you have completed all 14 shots.
Why the Game Uses 14 Shots
The game uses 14 shots because that is a common number of driver or tee shots a golfer may hit during a standard round of golf.
Most golf courses have 18 holes, but you usually do not hit driver on every hole. Par 3s typically do not require a driver, so 14 tee shots is a useful benchmark for measuring driving accuracy.
Reviewing Your Results
After your 14th shot, tap the Next arrow and then tap Finish.
The app will show an overlay of all the shots you recorded. This gives you a visual picture of your dispersion pattern.
Tap Finish again to see your results.
Your results include:
- Percentage of shots in the fairway
- Percentage of shots in the left rough
- Percentage of shots in the right rough
- Percentage of shots out of bounds
If you swipe to the right, you can also view your shot-shape percentages. This shows how often you hit each type of ball flight.
How to Use the Results
Use the results to identify patterns in your driving.
For example:
- If most misses are left, work on clubface control, alignment, or path.
- If most misses are right, check your setup, face angle, and release pattern.
- If many shots are OB, focus on a more reliable tee-shot shape.
- If one shot shape appears too often, such as a pull hook or slice, make that your priority in practice.
The goal is not only to hit more fairways, but to understand why you miss and what shape your misses usually take.
Practice Tip
Play the Fairway Finder game regularly and compare your scores over time. Track both your fairway percentage and your shot-shape tendencies. This will help you build a more reliable tee shot and make your driving practice more purposeful.
